Heritage Homecare Education Courses for ALF’S

REVISED 02/2007 

ABUSE AND NEGLECT (2 Hours) / EMERGENCY PLANS / ELOPEMENT (2 Hours) Included in the Direct Care orientation or may be taken as separate courses.

AED (2 Hours) Instruction on use and demonstration of the Automatic External Defibrillator. This course is required in certain cities and must be renewed every 2 years.

*AIDS/HIV UPDATE (2 Hours) All employees must do this 2 hour course within 6 months of hire and then do a 1 hour update every 2 years.

ALZHEIMER'S TRAINING LEVELS I & II (4 Hours each)  Any staff who have regular contact with or provide direct care to residents with Alzheimer's Disease or related disorders, must do Level I within 3 months of hire.  Those who provide direct care, must have an additional 4 hours of training at Level II within 9 months of employment.  This course must be taught by an approved provider.

ALZHEIMER'S REFRESHER COURSE In the following calendar year, the employee is required to to do a 4 hour refresher course. All training courses must be taught by an approved Alzheimer's Trainer with provider status regulated by the Area Agency on Aging.

 CPR (Cardio pulmonary resuscitation) All facilities must have a person who has a current CPR card in attendance in the facility at all times.  This must be renewed every 2 years, and taught by a certified instructor.

 *DIRECT CARE STAFF TRAINING (2 Hours) This course is required of all direct care staff within 30 days of hire, and must cover the specific topics as outlined in the regulations.  No update is required by the State of Florida at this time.

 DIRECT CARE ADL's for Direct Care Staff TRAINING (3 Hours) Staff who provide direct care to the residents, other than nurses, CNAs or Home Health Aides, must receive this course within 30 days of hire.  It must cover assisting with certain aspects of the resident's ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING.  No update is required by the State of Florida at this time.

 FIRST AID All facilities must have a person who has a current FIRST AID card in attendance at all times.  This must be renewed every 3 years, and taught by a certified instructor.

 *INFECTION CONTROL (1 hour class, or 2 hour home study with Personal Hygiene) Staff who provide direct care to the residents, other than nurses, CNAs or Home Health Aides, must receive this course within 30 days of hire.  The course must include universal precautions and sanitation.

 ASSISTANCE WITH MEDICATION S (4 Hours)  All staff, including CNAs and Home Health Aides, who assist the residents with self-administration of their medications, must take this course prior to assuming this responsibility.  This course must be taught by an RN or a pharmacist. A 2-hour update is required on an annual basis.

**MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND VALIDATION (6 Hours) Prior to assuming responsibility for administering medications, Group Home staff are required to have this course.  Instructor must be approved by DCF. The validation by an RN must be updated every 2 years.

 CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR ADMINISTRATORS & MANAGERS (12 Hours every 2 years)  All Administrators and managers must complete 12 hours of continuing education in any of the care topics identified in 400.454 FS or those related to assisted living.

 * This course may be taken independently by the employee at the facility as a home study.
